If you wash your long hair often or have very dry long hair, consider using only conditioner to wash it from time to time.

Rinse your hair in the coldest of water, this makes the cuticle lie flat and less likely to pull and break, it also gives very shiny hair that's easier to comb wet.

If your hair is especially coarse, extremely curly, consider using a leave-in conditioner in addition to a regular rinse-out conditioner (I recommend Daniel Galvin Spray Mist) Its fabulous and works wonders.

Deep condition your hair at least monthly. If your hair is dry or damaged, deep condition weekly. Hot oil treatments are a good alternative for very dry hair or for extra conditioning .

Lessen the friction on your hair whenever possible. Don't sleep with your hair loose or if you must, use a satin pillowcase.

Shampooing Long Hair - The Only Way

My hair is long and straight and can tangle very easily

1.Under the shower

2. As the water trickles down your hair, briefly smooth the water over each section of hair with your hands.

3. Apply shampoo only on the hair nearest the scalp. Gently work the hair into a lather around your scalp. I then use a much smaller amount of shampoo near the ends.

4. Use your hands to smooth the outsides of your hair. I also use my fingers to do some gentle pre-detangling .

5.Apply conditioner keeping your head upright. I do some gentle pre-detangling while rinsing.

6.After the shower, use your fist to squeeze the water from each section of your hair, starting from the ears and working your way to the ends. I repeat this process several times before and after the comb-out.

Before I ever tried using this technique, I used to wash my hair "upside down," which made the shampooing process easy but made detangling a real effort.
