Actually, I don't think it's really defeats the purpose at all. In fact, it shows it well. Jude is a sort of apathetic, down to earth character in this movie and he's trying to show his girl that this isn't going to get them anywhere; that they're far too idealistic and going about it the wrong way.

the way they portraide this part of the movie defeats gthe purpose of the song, the make it look like hes jelous of her boss but the song doesnt have anything to do with that
